I read today that every 12-13 year old girl in the country will soon be offered a vaccine that will protect them from HPV (the virus that leads to cervical cancer). It seems a lot of parents are reluctant, or flatly refusing it.
Some think that it could cause long term side affects, which i can understand, but other parents believe that it could cause young girls to become more promiscuous. Come on, please! what 13 year old girl knows cervical cancer stems from a sexually-transmitted virus? is it because some parents like to think that their little girls will stay little girls forever? or that if they dont think about the possibility their child is sexually active then she cant be?
I had the experience of thinking i may have HPV a couple of years ago, and at 23yrs old had never heard of HPV, it frightened the life out of me. I have since educated myself and protected myself as much as possible. I think young girls should be educated and well informed on this disease that is currently the second biggest cancer killer in women.
What do you think?
